Brazil Organic Fazenda Catuaí
The Hernandez family migrated from Spain to Brazil in 1896. First they worked as migrant laborers, then as farm employees. After many years working for others, they started to buy their own farms, eventually growing coffee in the states São Paulo, Paraná and Minas Gerais.
Following the family´s tradition and success as coffee producers, their descendents continued growing coffee and increasing their production.
In 1998, a member of the Hernandez family, Manoel Carlos Hernandez, started to focus his activities on a new (for Brazil) concept in agriculture: organic farming.
FAZENDA CATUAÍ is located at the South of Minas Gerais, the biggest coffee region of Brazil, in the town Fortaleza de Minas. This farm, originally acquired by the Hernandez family in 1977, covers 520 hectares at an elevation of 1200 meters.
The farm currently has 400,000 coffee trees, all producing organic coffee(varieties Catuaí, Icatu, Iapar-59 and Tupi).
The farm is certified by IBD, recognized internationally by IFOAM, USDA and JAS.
